Abyss is built so that most of what you log never leaves your device. This page explains exactly what we collect, what we don't, and the few things you can choose to share.
What Abyss stores on your device
- Dive log entries — site, date, times, max depth, duration, water temperature, visibility, notes, and safety-stop depth/duration.
- Profile — name, certification level and number, and optional body metrics (age, height, weight) with an optional photo. Body metrics are shown with a permanent "not medical advice" note and never gate any feature.
- App settings — language and display preferences.
None of this is uploaded to any server. Abyss has no account and no login — there's nothing to sign in with, because there's nowhere for this data to sync to.
Location data (GPS) — optional, on-device
When you tap "Use current location" while logging a dive, Abyss asks for a single location reading at that moment. It never captures your location automatically or in the background. Coordinates are stored only inside that dive's own record, on your device.
Your dive map and share images
If you use the dive map, Abyss shows your own logged dive locations to you, entirely on your device — no server, no other user involved. If you share your dive map as an image, that image is created on your device and handed to your phone's own share sheet. Only the image you choose to share ever leaves your device; the underlying coordinates are not attached to it and are not sent anywhere as data.
Site-condition observations — off by default
After a dive you can optionally rate a site's condition — clean, some debris, or heavy debris. This stays on your device unless you turn on "Contribute my site observations to open ocean data," which is off by default.
If you turn it on — shared: the site's coordinates (rounded to roughly 100 metres), the condition rating, and the date (day only).
Never shared: your name, any profile information, a device identifier, dive depth/duration, or your notes.
The resulting dataset is published as open data under a CC-BY 4.0 licence to support ocean-conservation research. You can turn this off at any time, which stops future contributions.
Emergency information
Abyss shows the dive-emergency hotline and local emergency number for your region. Tapping a number opens your phone's own dialer. Abyss never sends an alert, a message, or your location automatically — it's a directory, not a transmitter.
What Abyss does not do
- No account or sign-up — we hold no email or password for you.
- No advertising and no ad tracking.
- No analytics SDK or third-party tracker in the app today.
- No sale of personal data, to anyone, ever.
- No server-side copy of your personal dive log or profile.
Legal basis (EU/EEA/UK readers)
Because almost all processing happens on your device, most of it sits outside typical controller/processor data flows. Where Abyss does receive data — the opt-in, anonymized site-condition export — the legal basis is your consent (GDPR Article 6(1)(a)), withdrawable at any time.
Your choices and rights
- Export your own dive log at any time as a personal backup.
- Delete any entry, your profile, or the app at any time.
- Turn the open-data contribution on or off anytime in Profile settings.
- Contact us at privacy@abyssdive.app with any question about your data.
Children
Abyss is intended for certified divers and is rated [AGE RATING]. It is not directed at children.
Changes to this policy
We'll update the effective date above whenever this policy changes, and note it in the app if the change is significant.
